In the early 1990s this area was mostly vacant with a few houses and some farms. However, since 1998 Urbandale and Richcraft along with a number of other reputable builders have been developing the area at a rapid pace. There is still plenty of growth occurring as Builders continue constructing new single family homes, townhomes and condo flats in this south Ottawa neighbourhood. Riverside South is a desirable  community with many businesses, parks, community centre and walking paths, tennis courts and soccer fields.  Riverside South is a family focused community. There are fun annual events such as Breakfast with Santa, Canada Day celebrations, and special events throughout the year.

The area boundaries are River Road and Earl Armstrong Road, and just west of Limebank Road.  Riverside South will become a major community with south expansions closer to Manotick and to the east closer to Leitrim.

Transportation in Riverside

SouthLimebank Road was widened several years ago to 2 lanes in each direction along with a designated off road bike path to ease traffic. Also, the Vimy Bridge linking Riverside South to Barrhaven is now open!  There is a large OC Transpo Park and Ride lot in the heart of the community. This is widely used by residents who opt to take the bus into Ottawa and the surrounding area.

Schools in Riverside South

Riverside South is home to the only Ottawa area school with a balanced calendar. Students at L’école élémentaire catholique Bernard-Grandmaître will experience a summer vacation which is shortened by three weeks. Those three weeks will then be re-distributed throughout the school year giving the students and teachers a one-week Thanksgiving vacation, an additional week during the week of the Victoria Day holiday, and an additional week during March break. The balanced calendar is theoried to be very beneficial to students and teachers as they have more opportunities to unwind. The pilot project ended in 2010, and the school is running permanently on the balanced calendar. The results of the pilot project will help determine if other Ottawa schools will also apply that sort of calendar.
